The Hamburger Bahnhof commissioned us to design a visual identity for an exhibition featuring a ‘space-shattering’ work by Katharina Grosse.

But Katharina Grosse’s artwork was only completed and installed in time for the opening, which meant that no visual material was available at the time the visual identity was being developed and produced.

The entire corporate identity consists of a collage of two details from model photographs, scaled to actual size and meticulously edited.Katharina Grosse’s work on display – on the one hand monumental and central, on the other hand too large to be taken in as a whole at a glance – led to the conceptual approach for the visual identity or motif: as the work can only be perceived in fragments and can only be taken in by ‘walking past’ it, we examined fragments of model photography from the Grosse studio to find parallels for the potential experience later in the exhibition.

The entire CI consists of a collage of two details from model photographs, scaled to actual size and meticulously edited.
