In March 2023, marking the Berlinische Galerie's reopening after its construction phase, we rethought the visual concept for the Instagram account and developed a style guide for it. It was important to us to really start fresh – bolder and freer in how we handled the artworks than before. This included more motion content, a more documentary look, and the juxtaposition of professional, high-quality shots with raw smartphone snapshots or videos – two aesthetics that complement one another. Portraits of people – artists, collaborators, and others – as well as behind-the-scenes glimpses, like the setup of exhibitions, were also important to us, to make the people and processes behind the art and the gallery's work visible. The style guide is loosely based on the Berlinische Galerie's existing corporate design, but was further developed to suit the needs of a dynamic, digital channel.

Opening

As part of this project, we directed photographers Katja Strempel and Phillip Zwanzig to document and portray the opening event. Shooting with flash – normally against the rules in museum spaces – gave the images a distinct event-like, almost party atmosphere: bold contrasts of light and shadow, spontaneous energy, and a raw, in-the-moment aesthetic that set the opening apart from the museum's usual quiet ambiance.

Part of the concept involved developing a consistent visual style along with a flexible set of templates for different types of announcements – from event invitations and exhibition openings to artist portraits and general updates. Working with a wide range of content delivered by photographers and the gallery's team, including photos, texts, and visual material of varying formats and quality, we created a modular system that could adapt to diverse content while maintaining a cohesive and recognizable identity across all posts and formats. For select video clips, we also composed unique soundtracks to enhance the visual storytelling and strengthen the overall atmosphere.
